Pirelli Brings Art to Rubber on the Road with Tattooed Tire Art

Known as a leading tire manufacture for years, Pirelli has long been on top of its game currently holding the crown as the sole tire supplier for British Superbike, World Superbike and of course Formula 1.
With its high profile status in the tire industry, Pirelli’s involvement in the fashion world is not as well known, however the company has actually been involved since all the way back to 1877.
Always carving on the cutting edge and in celebration of the grand opening of Pirelli’s latest store in Milan, famous tattoo artist Scott Campbell was brought on-board to apply his talent on an entirely new ‘canvas’ for him: tattooing a tire and jacket.
The master artist who owns and operates the legendary Saved Tattoo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is a revered tattoo artist with a stellar reputation as the celebrity ink man to the stars.
Campbell said this project marked the first time he had ever worked with rubber as a medium and that the project required a substantial amount of research before he ever put tool to tread.
Captivated by the new challenge of tattooing leather and rubber, Campbell replaced working with a needle and ink with a gouge to engrave an eye, a heart and a skull into the tread of a Diablo Rosso II tire. His vision unfolded with the intricate carving of each groove by hand, with no use of a computer or any other modern day digital assistance.  Upon completion of this incredibly unique piece of art, the completely tattooed tire was then installed and displayed on a special-edition Ducati Diavel. In addition to the

tire, his design also adorns the interior of a special edition Dainese jacket, along with St. Christopher, the patron saint of motorcyclists.

With the visual art unveiling a remarkable work of art on rubber, tattoo sessions on Pirelli tire treads have become a mainstay throughout the EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo Accessori.)
Of course solely for display purposes, the work of this art is sure to evoke emotion and create a space for motorcycles  to lose themselves in appreciation.
