Two Stroke Theory

here is an overview of how two stroke motors work. Two stroke motors are more efficient that four strokes for a few reasons. 1 is the displacement, they generally have smaller combustion chambers, which means less fuel burned. 2 is the fact that they have fewer moving parts, which decreases the constant load on the engine, allowing it to burn the air-fuel mixture more efficiently, and reach much higher revolutions per minute.

Here is the process of the engine.

Intake, The fuel/air mixture is first drawn into the crankcase by the vacuum created during the upward stroke of the piston. The illustrated engine features a poppet intake valve, however many engines use a rotary value incorporated into the crankshaft. During the downward stroke the poppet valve is forced closed by the increased crankcase pressure. The fuel mixture is then compressed in the crankcase during the remainder of the stroke.

Transfer/Exhaust. Toward the end of the stroke, the piston exposes the intake port, allowing the compressed fuel/air mixture in the crankcase to escape around the piston into the main cylinder. This expels the exhaust gasses out the exhaust port, usually located on the opposite side of the cylinder. Unfortunately, some of the fresh fuel mixture is usually expelled as well. I'm going to interrupt here for a second to explain how that fresh mixture is prevented from being expelled.

so, you think an exhaust pipe is just meant to get the exhaust away from the engine, right? well in the 4 stroke application that's completely true, but in the two stroke, you must use a specially formed pipe, that uses something called backpressure, to force the expelled mixture back into the combustion chamber, this can be seen in the animation quite clearly.

Compression. The piston then rises, driven by flywheel momentum, and compresses the fuel mixture, insuring that the mixture explodes properly. (At the same time, another intake stroke is happening beneath the piston).

Power. At the top of the stroke the spark plug ignites the fuel mixture. The burning fuel expands, driving the piston downward, to complete the cycle.

Pirelli Brings Art to Rubber on the Road with Tattooed Tire Art

Known as a leading tire manufacture for years, Pirelli has long been on top of its game currently holding the crown as the sole tire supplier for British Superbike, World Superbike and of course Formula 1.
With its high profile status in the tire industry, Pirelli’s involvement in the fashion world is not as well known, however the company has actually been involved since all the way back to 1877.
Always carving on the cutting edge and in celebration of the grand opening of Pirelli’s latest store in Milan, famous tattoo artist Scott Campbell was brought on-board to apply his talent on an entirely new ‘canvas’ for him: tattooing a tire and jacket.
The master artist who owns and operates the legendary Saved Tattoo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is a revered tattoo artist with a stellar reputation as the celebrity ink man to the stars.
Campbell said this project marked the first time he had ever worked with rubber as a medium and that the project required a substantial amount of research before he ever put tool to tread.
Captivated by the new challenge of tattooing leather and rubber, Campbell replaced working with a needle and ink with a gouge to engrave an eye, a heart and a skull into the tread of a Diablo Rosso II tire. His vision unfolded with the intricate carving of each groove by hand, with no use of a computer or any other modern day digital assistance.  Upon completion of this incredibly unique piece of art, the completely tattooed tire was then installed and displayed on a special-edition Ducati Diavel. In addition to the

tire, his design also adorns the interior of a special edition Dainese jacket, along with St. Christopher, the patron saint of motorcyclists.

With the visual art unveiling a remarkable work of art on rubber, tattoo sessions on Pirelli tire treads have become a mainstay throughout the EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo Accessori.)
Of course solely for display purposes, the work of this art is sure to evoke emotion and create a space for motorcycles  to lose themselves in appreciation.
Ride ON!

Inspiration. It can come from so many sources, and affect different people in different ways. Some people take no notice of inspiration. Some people use just their surroundings for inspiration. And some people actively seek out inspiration, grabbing it by the collar and headbutting it into submission. Darrell Schneider from DS Restorations (DSR) is one of the latter. After more than 25 years in automobile restoration, Darrell decided he needed a change, and a challenge. A long history with motorbike riding, with no further thought than fueling them up and riding them, gave Darrell a basic idea of where he could start. The challenge brought up the bike we feature here today, the DSR GP 250R Café Racer. Built mainly around CRF250R components, with inspiration drawn from numerous bike builders, it’s proof that sometimes it’s worth it to challenge yourself, you never know what might happen…

The Yamaha XJ600 flies under the radar in the motorcycling world. It was released in 1984 and is the first 600cc inline four featuring a mono shock rear suspension which was considered to be advanced technology about 28 years ago. The Pimmel & Messer custom workshop based in Northeastern France, tore the bike down for a complete rebuild, with every worn or broken part replaced. Let’s check out some photos about Yamaha XJ600 below:

The Gravel Crew always turn out refreshingly unique customs and this bike is a great example of their work, it started life as a 1977 Yamaha DT250 dirt bike before being totally stripped down and rebuilt into the rather nicely detailed custom you see before you.
